SOUTH JORDAN — Police in Salt Lake County say a “bizarre” chain of events involving a carjacked van, a dog and blood smears on a car ended with an Ogden man being arrested and taken to a hospital for surgery.

Ogden resident Michael Bullock, 41, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday on multiple charges after police say he allegedly attempted to steal one car and later succeeded in stealing another.

Lt. Matt Pennington of the South Jordan Police Department said police were called to 10690 South Jordan Gateway about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, after a man tried to enter the passenger side of a vehicle and pull the passenger from her seat.

The driver was able to drive away before the man — who is suspected to be Bullock — could get into the car, Pennington said.

Police believe Bullock then broke into the nearby Deseret Power building and cut his hand, Pennington said.

When police arrived to investigate the attempted carjacking, they were flagged down by another driver who claimed Bullock — who was “covered” in blood — ran up to her car and pounded on the driver’s side windows, Pennington said. Police found blood on the driver’s side door and window of the vehicle.

Police were then notified by a couple who said the bloody Bullock gave them a dog and told them to wait nearby so he could get a gun out of a car, Pennington said. The couple also told police Bullock said he was being chased by “invisible people.”

Police say Bullock then ran to the Volkswagen SouthTowne car dealership and attempted to steal a car.

When he was unsuccessful, police say Bullock ran north and carjacked the van of a man picking up his wife at the Air Medical Resource Group office building. Police arrived before Bullock could leave the parking lot, but he damaged the inside of the van before he was willingly taken into custody, Pennington said.

The cut to Bullock’s hand was serious enough that it required surgery following his arrest, Pennington said. When Bullock was released from a local hospital, he was taken to jail custody.

Police weren’t sure Monday evening why Bullock was in the South Jordan area.

As of Tuesday morning, Bullock is being held at the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of burglary, robbery and criminal mischief. He is being held on a $25,000 bail.
