KINGSPORT -- Kingsport police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened Friday night.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., Central Dispatch was notified of a motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle on Union Street at the intersection with Greenway Street. Based upon the severity of the crash, the Kingsport Police Traffic Unit responded.

Their findings are as follows: A white 2001 GMC Yukon (full-size S.U.V.), driven by Henrietta R. Weaver, was eastbound on Greenway Street preparing to turn left onto northbound Union Street. Meanwhile, a black Yamaha R1 (racing-style sport motorcycle), ridden by Johnny D. Berry, had turned off of West Stone Drive and was southbound on Union Street.

Just as the GMC pulled forward into the intersection, the Yamaha topped the crest of a hill and struck the driver’s side of the GMC. Berry was seriously injured in the crash and transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County EMS. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital. Neither Weaver, nor her passenger, were injured in the crash.

Based upon evidence at the scene, corroborated by independent eye-witness testimony, Investigators determined the Yamaha was being operated at a high rate of speed, and the front wheel was off the ground as it crested the hill just prior to impact.

This crash remains under open and active investigation by the Kingsport Police Traffic Unit.
